At Oak Children's Care, our story began 14 years ago in the wake of the global financial crisis, a time when many families were struggling to navigate the challenges brought on by economic instability. During this period, we witnessed first hand how financial constraints led to disruptions in family life, and the profound impact this had on young people. What started as a simple hobby tutoring young people and offering a safe space, for parents to drop off their children quickly became something much more significant.
We began to notice that many of the children in our care were exhibiting signs of learning difficulties, behavioural issues, and a general sense of unrest. As we spent more time with them, offering care, compassion, and support, we realised that these challenges often stemmed from their past experiences and the instability in their childhoods and homes. It became clear that these young people needed more than just academic support, they needed understanding, empathy, and a safe environment where they could express themselves without judgment.
As we continued our work, word spread about the difference we were making. Our approach to tutoring became known not just for the academic achievements it produced, but for the positive changes in the attitudes and behaviours of the young people we worked with. We saw students who once had no goals or ambitions begin to excel in their studies, achieving grades above their GCSE predictions and going on to pursue A-levels with the view to go university.
These were young people who despite the odds, began to dream of becoming entrepreneurs, professionals, and change makers in their own right. This transformation, this journey from struggle to success, is who we are at Oak Children’s Care.
We wanted to take our experience to the next level by helping as many young people as possible. Through our research, we discovered children’s residential care. The background stories we encountered about children prior coming into residential care deeply touched and moved us. It highlighted the immense challenges and struggles these young people face today.
With compassion, empathy, and a strong commitment to this cause, we felt driven to make a meaningful changes in their lives. Supporting young people and contributing to their betterment is something we find incredibly fulfilling and rewarding. This passion and dedication led to the beginning of Oak Children’s Care.
